Volleyball: 'Cats sweep weekly MAC awards

After recording wins at Northern Illinois and Western Michigan during the same trip for the first time since 2007, Ohio swept the weekly Mid-American Conference awards for the second time this season.

Sophomore setter Abby Gilleland and graduate student middle blocker Alexis Pinson were named the MAC East offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively.

For Pinson, this is the third time receiving the honor in the past four weeks, and the fourth time this year. It is Gilleland’s second time being named the offensive player of the week this season.

Gilleland led the Bobcats offensively this weekend as she racked up 95 assists, 30 digs, 16 kills and two aces in Ohio’s two victories. On Friday she recorded a team-high 39 assists, along with seven kills and eight digs.

During Saturday’s five-set win she recorded career-highs in assists (56) and digs (22). She was just one kill away from a triple-double, as she added nine kills for the Bobcats. Ohio’s win on Saturday was just the third time since 2008 that Western Michigan had lost on its home court in conference play.

Pinson totaled 17 kills and seven blocks for Ohio this weekend. On Friday she led Ohio defensively with 4.5 blocks, including one solo, while adding four kills and an ace. In Saturday’s victory, Pinson recorded 2.5 blocks and 13 kills, which was good for second on the team in the win.

Ohio did not move in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, as the Bobcats sit outside the top-25. The squad is again ranked 34th in the nation, with 11 points, which is just three more points than they received last week.
