Young Life hosts formal to raise funds for high school students

Local high school students have a greater ability to attend religious-based camps thanks to an event hosted by an on-campus organization this weekend.

Young Life, a Christian organization focused on uplifting adolescents in their faith, hosted a formal in Baker 240 and 242 on Saturday.

The event, a masquerade-themed formal, was open to all Ohio University students. Students who attended were encouraged to make and decorate their own masks and to dress to the nines to prepare for a night of dancing and food from 8 to 11 p.m.

A local DJ set the mood for the evening with a playlist of upbeat music. Snacks were provided from local eateries such as Fluff Bakery and Restaurant Salaam. Students who attended were able to memorialize the night with picture strips from a photo booth.

According to Kevin McCaw, a senior at Ohio University studying sport management and a leader of Young Life, “(It was) a great thing to…have a dance, be goofy and raise money for a good cause.”

In the week leading up to the event, students involved in Young Life sold tickets for the formal at a booth in Baker.

The money raised from the formal will go toward helping local high school students attend Christianity-affiliated camps.

The exact amount of money raised from ticket sales has not been determined, but last year’s formal raised a little more than a thousand dollars, according to McCaw.

Young Life consists of about 25 college students who are “leaders” at local high schools, meaning they hold weekly or biweekly meetings with students from various schools in Athens County.

Young Life had its first meeting on Oct. 8 and will meet every Tuesday at 3 Elliott St.
