Age doesn’t have to be a constraint and one local screening will prove that.
The documentary Age of Champions, centered on five senior competitors who try to go for the gold at the National Senior Games, is considered to be an uplifting and inspiring tale about not giving up on life despite your age.
Athens will get a chance to check out the movie for themselves, for three days only, at the Athena Cinema, 20 S. Court St., thanks to Arts for Ohio. However,
students and audience members over 60 will be able to see the movie for free.
Arts for Ohio is one of 7 sponsors for the event which will be sharing their expertise at the screening.
“This collaboration serves as an excellent example of the kind of projects Arts for Ohio supports,” said Maureen Wagner, project director for Arts for Ohio.
“Projects that use the arts as a medium to promote collaboration and partnerships between the university and the region to move, provoke and inspire our community.”
In addition to the film, each screening will feature a speaker talking after the film.
Milena Miller, development director for Appalachian Community Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice & Health Services, Inc. — one of the sponsors of the event — said these speakers will include local senior athletic runners and members from The Athens Village, Live Healthy Appalachia, HeartWorks and SeniorBEAT.
Miller’s organization will be leading one of the discussions about staying healthy.
“This film, in terms of prevention and staying active, is not only in line with our visiting nurses mission but goes along well with the Affordable Care Act and Medicare's attempt to decrease hospitalizations and keep folks aging well and with less illnesses,” Miller said.
Above all else, the presenters believe the film will be an uplifting and engaging film for audiences of all ages to see.
“As a community foundation, we fund projects that we hope will save and inspire lives,” said Susan Urano, executive director of The Athens Foundation — another sponsor. “As an active older person myself, seeing these people do what they do is really inspiring.”
