An 83-year-old Nelsonville woman fended off a “school-aged” burglar with her cane Monday, authorities said.
At around noon, Rozella Brown was watching television when she heard the doorbell ring at her Bessemer Road residence, but didn’t answer the door, according to a news release from Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly.
Deputies responded to the burglary, which is still under investigation.
Brown then saw a male burglar — who was average height and weight, wearing a gray corduroy hooded jacket and blue jeans — near her purse and “immediately and vigorously” began hitting the man, who Brown identified only as “Austin,” according to the release.
He stole about $100 in cash before escaping out the back door.
