Cady Hall will close at the end of Fall Semester

South Green’s Cady Hall will close at the end of Fall Semester, but it will likely open again before it’s demolished in 2015 as part of the university’s residence hall makeover.

Cady will be used as an interim housing option for students during the winter and spring breaks.

“With Bush Hall coming back online, we will have an excess of student beds for Spring 2014 and a shortage of interim housing options for students and guests,” said Peter Trentacoste, executive director for Residential Housing.

Residential Housing officials expect, as in previous years, there to be fewer students living on campus during Spring Semester, Trentacoste said.

“We have 8,000 beds on this campus, and we don’t need all of them,” said Ryan Lombardi, vice president for Student Affairs.

Cady residents were emailed at the beginning of the academic year that their residence hall would be closing in an effort to save money on utilities.

“We intentionally assigned students into Cady with the knowledge that students would be reassigned for spring,” Trentacoste said.

The residence halls were at capacity at the beginning of the year; the number of students who never came to Athens and the number who withdrew opened up spaces to relocate students living in Cady, Trentacoste said.

Many Cady residents, including residential assistants, will be moving to a renovated Bush Hall, located on East Green.

“It’s scheduled to be open for students to move in their personal belongings in mid-December before they depart for Fall Semester,” said Christine Sheets, assistant vice president of facilities and capital planning for Student Affairs.

Cady could reopen if more beds are needed at a later time, such as if it’s necessary for another large incoming freshman class.
