Climate expert to visit OU

Lonnie Thompson, a climate expert, will speak in the Walter Hall Rotunda at 7 p.m. about the environmental issues.

Thompson has been featured in The New York Times and National Geographic discussing his environmental analysis. He is also a professor of earth sciences at Ohio State University, where he received his masters and doctorate degrees in geology.

Most notably, he garnered worldwide attention for drilling and analyzing ice cores from mountain glaciers in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. He and his wife, Ellen, operate the paleoclimatology research group at the Byrd Polar Research Center at OSU.

In the 1970s, Thompson was the first scientist to take samples from a remote tropical ice cap and analyze them for ancient climate signals.

“He is passionate about educating others on the importance of climate change, and expressing his concern about the future of our planet,” Ryan Fogt, an OU professor in the Geography department. “I hope students will understand how quickly the climate is changing, and that there are many potential irreversible changes going on.”
