Dads Weekend hosts plethora of bonding activities

Dads Weekend will be bringing a variety of activities for students and their fathers to enjoy the many different aspects of Ohio University and the Athens community.

One of these activities includes a hike to Old Man’s Cave, hosted and led by Outdoor Pursuits, said Dan Vorisek, director of Outdoor Pursuits.

“We’re going to take a group of dads and students out to the Hocking Hills state forest area to do some exploring of the trails, and also the waterfalls out there,” Vorisek said. “It’s an area that’s called Old Man’s Cave. But the whole area is full of sandstone caves … really neat rock formations.”

Vorisek said the hike is full and events like these tend to be very popular on these special weekends.

“All of the programs have a long wait list right now because we have a limited capacity in all of these,” Vorisek said. “But it’s something that we’ve (been) doing for awhile and it gets a good response every time we offer it.”

Bringing together families through outdoor activities is what Vorisek said he looks forward to seeing.

“I like to see the parents getting engaged with the students, doing something outdoors, something very physically active,” Vorisek said. “So there’s a lot of good memories that are made because they are doing something off campus. There’s something about outdoor recreation that kind of makes for a lot stronger memories and some good things to talk about.”

Another event, hosted by University Program Council, is “Brunch with The Beatles,” where students will have the opportunity to take their dads back in time to enjoy a Beatles tribute band, Abbey Road. There will also be prizes, a photo booth, drinks, food and a caricaturist, said Victoria Vincent, university events executive for UPC and a senior studying exercise physiology.

“[UPC] put[s] on a fun event every year for each family weekend, so we just try to change up the events to cater to different crowds,” Vincent said. “Like for this year, it’s ‘Brunch with The Beatles,’ so we’re trying to be a little nostalgic for the fathers. …The event is supposed to just cater to all around, anyone who enjoys entertainment.”

With many different aspects to the event, Vincent said the show will be something different than other events on campus.

“We want to have an entertainment that’s different than most, so that’s why the Beatles cover band is … something you don’t really see a lot around here,” Vincent said. “[Those who attend] can look forward to just experiencing something different on campus and having a lot of different options of fun.”
