Ohio University officials filed a complaint July 19 against a former student who has failed to honor her promissory notes, or promises to make payments to the university in a timely manner, a matter involving federal law.
Vickie Bumgardner, of Barboursville, W. Va., was originally set to provide the requested sum of money Wednesday but Judge George P. McCarthy issued a continuance, extending the deadline to answer to the request back to Dec. 10 by 4 p.m.
Bumgardner executed promissory notes in July of 2003 and 2004 to borrow $2,100 and $6,100, respectively, bringing her to a grand total $8,200, according to court documents.
The documents also state that Bumgardner is obligated to repay the university “principal, interest and all reasonable collection costs incurred in the collection of this debt.”
After accounting for interest rates and collection of debt, the university is asking for the favor of the court to grant them $14,091.
Robert A. Schuerger, Bumgardner’s attorney, declined to provide a comment.
