Kelly gets new impound lot

After having to keep cars at the Athens Fairgrounds for almost three months, Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly is getting a new parking lot for impounded cars and — possibly  — about 25 sheriffs’ cruisers.

The Athens County Commissioners approved a year-long lease Tuesday at the former Landot Used Auto Parts site, 10414 State Route 550, Commissioner Charlie Adkins said.

The yearlong lease, which begins Friday, costs $1,800 — about $150 each month.

Kelly has been adamant about getting a new building.

“The sheriff requested a new impound lot, so I’ve been working on it for a few months,” Adkins said. “We wanted to find a place that was suitable.”

Kelly has in the past said in addition to an impound lot, he’d like a parking lot, jail, an EMS station and new headquarters.

“If anybody thinks I’m happy that we didn’t get a new building, they’re entirely wrong,” Kelly said in a previous Post article.
