Lt. Gov: Get ready for winter now; proactively keep home, vehicles safe

With blustery winter conditions fast approaching, Ohio Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor would like to take this week to remind Ohioans to review insurance coverage and winterize their homes and vehicles for this year’s winter awareness safety week.

This week is winter awareness safety week, and is the perfect opportunity to be proactive for the coming winter months, officials said.

“Taking proactive steps to protect your property and vehicle can help address potential safety issues and decrease the likelihood of having to file an insurance claim,” Taylor, who also serves as the director of the state department of insurance, said in a news release.

To avoid damages caused by harsh conditions, Taylor provided some key tips for winterizing your home.

It is important to clean out gutters and downspouts, look for missing shingles and broken, overhanging tree limbs, inspect the underside of the roof from the attic for signs of leaks, check water pipe insulation to prevent winter freezes, make sure dryer vent is unobstructed as well as assemble emergency supplies, including non-perishable food, water, flashlights and a battery-powered radio.

In addition to taking those precautions in the home, there are a few steps Taylor addressed regarding proactive vehicle safety.

Have a mechanic double check that all systems are running properly and that tires have adequate tread and air pressure. In addition, keep your windshield wiper fluid tank filled and maintain at least a half tank of gasoline at all times.

Be sure to get a windshield scraper and brush for ice and snow removal, as well as keep a snack, water, extra warm attire, blankets and a first aid kit in the vehicle at all times.

Despite taking precautions, accidents are bound to occur.

In the case of an accident, take photos of the damage, exchange information as well as attain witness information at the scene.

To best prepare for the winter season there are multiple resources Ohioans can utilize including homeowners and auto insurance guides that are available at www.insurance.ohio.gov.
