Local man pleads not guilty on counts of multiple felonies

A Chauncey man was arraigned in the Athens County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to one count of abduction.

Chad Smith, 26, also faces charges of domestic violence and resisting arrest, per his indictment. He could face up to three years in prison for the third-degree felony.

“(Smith) unlawfully did, knowingly, by force or threat, restrain the liberty of (the victim) under circumstances that created risk of physical harm or placed her in fear,” court documents state.

Smith will appear in court for a pretrial hearing Dec. 4 and a jury trial Dec. 17.

OU goes to court for student’s unpaid fines

Ohio University officials filed a complaint this summer against a former student who has failed to honor $8,200 in promissory notes, or promises to make payments to the university in a timely manner, a matter involving federal law.

After accounting for interest rates and collection of debt, the university is asking for the favor of the court to grant them $14,091.

Vickie Bumgardner, of Barboursville, W.Va., has until Dec. 10 by 4 p.m. to pay.

Kiser’s to serve alcohol sometime this year

Kiser’s Barbeque Eclipse, Jackson Drive in The Plains, managed to attain a site-specific liquor license in the November general election earlier this month.

Sean Kiser, co-owner of Kiser’s, said alcohol could be served sometime in 4 to 6 weeks time.

Official results of the election, which were released Thursday afternoon, show the measure winning by a margin of 82 votes.

Preparations begin for 2016 presidential election

Supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former Secretary of State and U.S. Senator from New York, will gather in Athens on Monday in Baker University Center Room 231 at 6 p.m.

The “organizing meeting” is headlined by Seth Bringman, an Ohio native who is the national communications director for Ready for Hillary, a group not affiliated with Clinton.
