Women's Basketball: Ohio finished the San Juan Shootout with a loss to No. 8 Maryland

After spending the past week in Puerto Rico, the Bobcats might return from the San Juan Shootout with a tan, but they dropped a pair of games and fell back to .500.

On Saturday, Ohio (3-3) played a team ranked in the top 10 for the second time this season and again, it was pummeled 84-60 by No. 8 Maryland. On Nov. 21, Ohio lost 90-33 to No. 4 Louisville.

"I thought we played harder today," coach Bob Boldon said. “We had a good look at the tape last night, and, sometimes, the truth hurts. You need to look at the tape and see what you're doing wrong and make adjustments.”

Ohio jumped out to an early 14-11 lead, but Maryland (7-1) responded by stringing together a 26-5 run, which led to the Bobcats trailing 44-25 at the break.

For the third time this season sophomore forward Lexie Baldwin posted 12 points, while sophomore guard Kiyanna Black also finished a dozen points, bringing her points per game average to almost 14 per contest.

Redshirt sophomore guard Kat Yelle recorded double-digits as well with 10, which was the second time this year she achieved the feat.

Maryland also had big performances from their usual suspects.

Senior forward and preseason All-American Alyssa Thomas finished the contest with her seventh-consecutive double-double as she scored 13 points and grabbed 10 boards, while freshman guard Lexie Brown put up a career-high 16 points.

“I was really proud how we kept up our level of play on short rest from yesterday,” Maryland coach Brenda Fresesaid. “Just proud of how we got down to business when we needed to this weekend.”

“I thought the brightest spot of the trip is that we showed we made some adjustments and made a better effort,” Boldon said. “Being able to make improvements is what this non-conference slate is all about. You see how really good teams play. You get a real-life evaluation of where you're at."
