Ali Baba's takes OU to court for more than $1,000

The owner of Ali Baba’s buggy, a well-known Uptown business, filed a complaint in the Ohio Court of Claims on Monday against Ohio University and is asking for more than $1,000 in compensation for damage to his trailer.

Nisar Shaikh, of Millfield, filed a complaint against OU’s Risk Management and Safety that said one of the university’s buses hit the corner of his buggy when turning right off of Court Street and onto East Union Street.

“After (the) bus hit my buggy, the driver of the bus did not stop,” Shaikh said in court documents. “(He) just drove off.”

Shaikh is requesting $1,325 from the university to compensate for the damaged wall and to replace the rivet and the front corner support.

Katie Klann, a sophomore studying photojournalism, is listed as Shaikh’s only witness in court documents.

Klann, who is also a photographer at The Post, was employed at the buggy until about one month ago, according to court documents. She said the incident occurred in September.

“I was working in the buggy with Nisar and one of the OU-sanctioned buses rounded the corner and hit the side of the buggy while we were in it,” she said, adding that the bus hit her bike and slightly bent the frame.

Klann said that the buggy was parked in its normal parallel parking spot on Union Street — it was not protruding into the road — which Shaikh pays to use.

OU is ordered to file two copies of the investigation report within 60 days of Tuesday.

There is not yet any response from university officials in court documents.
