Catching up with campus news: Bedbugs, suicide prevention, road closure affect campus

Informational campaign concerning bedbugs

To head off rising national reports of bedbug occurrences, Ohio University will start a campaign to educate the Athens campus on the risks of bedbugs, according to a university news release.

The campaign will feature programming in the residence halls and online to raise students’ awareness and encourage them to keep their rooms clean and uninfested, according to the release.

Since the fall of 2011, the Athens campus has had seven confirmed cases of bedbugs, according to Chad Keller, environmental health coordinator in the university's Environmental Health and Safety Department.

More information about bedbugs can be found at www.ohio.edu/healthalerts.

Suicide Prevention Training to be held on Dec. 11

Four out of 10 OU students who have visited drop-in hours at Counseling and Psychological Services had suicidal thoughts, and the Division of Student Affairs handles a suicide issue at least once a week, according to a university news release.

To combat these suicidal tendencies among students, OU employees have created the Ohio University Suicide Prevention Coalition.

About 25 OU employees will receive a training on preventing suicide in Baker University Center on Dec. 11 to have a core group of employees trained in suicide prevention, according to the release. They will then pass that training on to Residence Life staff and others.

University Terrace to temporarily close

A section of University Terrace that runs from the southeast to north side of Clippinger Laboratories will close for most of winter break, according to a university news release.

The road will be closed Dec. 16 to Jan. 10 because of scheduled work for the Housing Master Plan site directly to the east of Clippinger.

Both Clippinger parking lots will remain open during the road closure, the release said.
