Council members, fearful that fracking led to recent quake, to draft letter in opposition to new injection well

As the fiscal year draws to a close, Athens City Council plans to discuss final appropriations to be issued before the end of the year, as well as appropriations that need cancelling to account for any money that could be transferred from this year's general fund into the next budget.

Council will convene tonight at City Hall, 8 E. Washington St., to discuss a variety most already-touched-on topics.

Council members will draft a letter in objection to the proposed injection well located in Torch, Ohio, in harmony with one Athens County Commissioners previously wrote.

The letter was asked to be drafted last week by Councilwomen Chris Fahl and Michele Papai, who said they suspect the earthquake that occurred in Athens County on Nov. 20 was induced by fracking.

Also on the agenda: omitting the term "handicapped" on ramps and in parking garages and replacing it with "persons with disabilities"; extending the city's contract with the Ohio Power Company; paying off debts for city fire trucks; and making

final amendments to the 2013 appropriation ordinance.
