Athens Cinema brings back classic Stanley Kubrick films in retrospective

Though he died in 1999, one of the world’s most famous directors, Stanley Kubrick, is coming to the Athena Cinema.

The theater is hosting a retrospective of the filmmaker’s work, starting with Paths of Glory on Monday. The retrospective will then continue with seven more of his films and end on March 25.

“We had great success with our Hitchcock Retrospective last year and we enjoy showcasing the work of individual directors,” said Alexandra Kamody, managing director of the Athena Cinema. “We chose the films of Stanley Kubrick because we thought his films appealed to a diverse audience of different backgrounds and ages.”

Kamody said the series will continue the theater’s tradition of showing more artistic and engaging films.

“Unlike multiplex theaters that often concentrate on big budget, high grossing Hollywood pictures, at the Athena, we strive to show meaningful and unique films that engage the audience in many ways,” Kamody said. “We also value the history of cinema and enjoy providing a chance to see the classics on the big screen.”

The theater will be showing the movies through its new digital projectors, which have been installed during the past year.

“Other than Paths of Glory, which will be on Blu-Ray, all the other titles will be on DCP, (or) Digital Cinema Package,” said Hsin-ning Chang, head projectionist at the Athena Cinema. “All of them will be projected through our 2k projector. So, although not on print, they will be projected with cinema-quality.”

Brett Engelhart, a junior studying business, said he is looking forward to seeing three or four Kubrick films during their screenings.

“Definitely The Shining and 2001: A Space Odyssey and possibly A Clockwork Orange,” Engelhart said. “Eyes Wide Shut is one of my favorite movies already.”

Overall, there is one main drive for this retrospective, Kamody said.

“We hope that this series provides a fun opportunity for students to enjoy Kubrick’s films as they were meant to be seen—in a dark theater, on the big screen,” she said.
