KAITLIN OWENS | STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER Students enter Boyd Dining Hall on West Green. Boyd Dining Hall will be closed next school year for renovations.

Culinary Services plan, finish renovations

Ohio University is beginning the early stages of renovations on Boyd Dining Hall that should be ready by next year.

“We can’t wait to further enhance the on-campus dining experience for everyone,” said Dan Pittman, assistant director of auxiliary sales. “Culinary Services has renovated both Nelson Court and Shively Court, which leaves West Green without a renovated dining hall. We strongly believe that every student should be able to enjoy an updated dining experience.”

Boyd renovations will cost $9 million and Jefferson Dining Hall renovations will cost $8 million, according to university documents from November. Both will be funded by culinary reserves.

It wasn’t clear by press time what the university plans for Jeff.

Over the summer, officials will also finish renovating the Central Food Facility, where some food is produced for the Athens campus.

To complete the building’s upgrade, officials will reconfigure the warehouse and get a new freezer and a backup for the emergency generator.

The renovation of the Central Food Facility, approved by Board of Trustees at its Friday meeting, will cost $3 million funded by culinary reserves.

“The dining auxiliary operation is really good at having good solid continuous customer service, so I don’t think anybody would notice at all,” said Harry Wyatt, vice president for Facilities.

Culinary will advertise the ongoing construction on its website, Twitter account and signs outside the buildings.

Although distance is one of the major factors in her choice in dining hall, Anna Sarra, a freshman studying communication sciences and disorders, said she prefers to eat at recently reconstructed Nelson Dining Hall which just received a frozen yogurt bar.

“(Boyd)’s not terrible,” Sarra said. “I just think it should be renovated.”
