An Ohio University student pleaded guilty Friday to two drug charges after possessing and selling a form of ecstasy from his 17 W. Washington St. apartment, which is located within 1,000 feet of the Athens Middle School.
Kameron Rubin, 21, was indicted Sept. 19 for aggravated trafficking and aggravated possession of drugs, felonies of the second and fifth degrees, respectively, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
There is no report to the Athens County Prosecutor’s Office to indicate that Rubin sold drugs on middle school property or to middle school students.
“On or about (Feb. 1, 2013, Rubin) unlawfully did knowingly sell or offer to sell ... 4-methylethcathinone from his apartment,” according to court documents. “The amount of the drug involved equals or exceeds the bulk amount but is less than five times the bulk amount.”
Rubin could face a maximum sentence of four years in prison for the crimes, though the sentence is still pending, Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn said.
OU spokeswoman Katie Quaranta, citing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which shields a student’s educational records from being disclosed to the public, said that she could not provide a university comment regarding Rubin’s standing at OU or his involvement in university disciplinary services through the Office of Community Standards and Student Responsibility, the branch of OU that interprets and enforces the student code of conduct.
Quaranta also mentioned Collegiate Recovery and Counseling and Psychological Services offer students disciplinary help, though she could not speak to Rubin’s involvement in those programs.
Court documents state Rubin obtained $6,280 from his drug offenses and apparently used it to purchase more drugs.
Rubin was arraigned in October. His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 24 after a court-ordered pre-sentencing investigation.
