Yolan Dennis, a registered nurse from Warren Township, is to announce her candidacy for Ohio's 94th House District, a run that if successful would unseat three-term Rep. Debbie Phillips, D-Athens.
Dennis plans to file petitions Thursday morning at the Athens County Board of Elections on Court Street and formally announce her candidacy at 12:30 p.m. at the Barlow Branch Library, 45 White Oak Professional Center in Barlow.
Her official Facebook page, which includes a photo of a campaign yard sign, does not show any indication of affiliation with a political party, nor did a press release sent out late Wednesday night.
In the release, Dennis said she's running for elected office because she's dissatisfied with the politics of today.
“Over the years I have become very concerned with the direction of government, both in Columbus and in Washington D.C." Dennis said. "The citizens of the district have suffered from the power special interests groups have gained over our government in Washington and even here in Ohio.
"The shuttered coal mines and power plants are not the fault of the jobless; the fault lies in wrong-headed policies and a lack of leadership. I want to be an advocate for the farmers, the small business owners, the skilled workers, and the energy producers in Ohio.
"In medicine, we diagnose problems, and apply remedies for our patients. In the same way, we all must work together to find solutions for the citizens of SE Ohio.”
The state's representative from the 94th House District is elected by citizens in Athens, Meigs, Vinton and Washington Counties.

Dennis and her husband of 35 years, Dr. Lloyd Dennis, have raised five children on their farm in Warren Township, according to the press release. She has worked in he family's medical practice during the past 15 years.??
The release notes that Dennis enjoys music, plays bass fiddle and is a member of the National Rifle Association and holds a CCW permit.
