Council Pres. Sands expected to return from two week hiatus

Athens City Council will convene tonight at Athens City Hall, 8 E. Washington St., for its biweekly committee meeting, of which Council President Jim Sands is expected to return after a two week hiatus.

The city & safety services committee announcements will be lead by Kent Butler, D-1st ward, who will give updates on the Brine Lagoon.

Butler, who filled in for City Council President Jim Sands at last week's council meeting, said that he expects Sands to return tonight to lead council. Sands has faced legal trouble with his flower shop in Athens but the reason for his departure from council has not been clear.

Sands has not returned The Post's calls for comment.

Michele Papai, D-3rd ward, will lead the transportation committee announcements with an update on the construction that will occur on Richland Avenue.

Councilwoman Chris Knisely, D-at large, will lead the finance & personnel committee announcements with updates about appropriations to be made citywide in the coming weeks.

Finally, Chris Fahl, D-4th ward, will present for the planning & development committee regarding a severance tax for oils and gas.
