Ohio University Group I, Group II and all regional faculty members will receive the same compensation pool increases if the Board of Trustees adopts a new Faculty Senate proposal.
Tenure-track faculty make up Group I, and Group II includes teaching faculty who have 3-to-4-year contracts.
Senate proposed Monday that the compensation rates offered to Group I and II faculty and all faculty on regional campuses be the same, rather than a proportional percentage.
OU officials have long said they want the university’s faculty compensation to rank third among Ohio four-year public universities, in keeping with the standard set by OU’s Board of Trustees in the 1970s.
In order to do so, OU has planned to increase faculty compensation $3.9 million over three years.
The proposed percent increases for faculty members are estimated as:
• 2.92 percent for professors
• 1.96 percent for associate professors
• 1.16 percent for assistant professors
At this point, all figures concerning the pool increases are rough estimates because variables such as changes in the economy or inflation can cause projections to deviate, said John Day, associate dean of academic affairs and associate provost for academic budget.
“There’s going to have to be a continuous evaluation along the way,” Day said.
The Board of Trustees is expected to vote on whether it will award these compensation pool increases using Faculty Senate’s proposition during its March meeting.
“The board’s response to the faculty compensation plan was very positive,” said Elizabeth Sayrs, Faculty Senate chairwoman.
OU President Roderick McDavis also spoke at the meeting regarding what he considers to be an “especially difficult and challenging winter for us” because of university closures.
Though faculty members are not permitted to make up missed classes, they are allowed to ask students to make up work they may have missed.
“We ask you to be flexible, to be patient,” said Howard Dewald, associate provost for Faculty and Academic Planning, during the meeting.
Faculty Senate also passed a resolution to extend excused absences to students who miss class because of their involvement in military reserve training days.
