Fishing, birds and rock & roll to hit The Union

Sport Fishing USA, hopes to reel in a crowd with their hooks and catchy melodies Saturday night along with garage rock groups Red Feathers and Pegasister of Columbus.

Although the band has frequented the Athens music scene since 2010, Sport Fishing USA has two thirds of its members residing in Yellow Springs outside of Dayton, while guitarist Nathan Moore holes up in Athens.

The band was born out of the songs Moore wrote and recorded in his bedroom with the help of his brother Brendan.

Even the band’s name, Sport Fishing USA comes from a book off Nathan’s bookshelf.

“I was writing a song and it was sitting on the shelf and it works its way into a chorus and I decided to name the album after it,” Moore said. “(Then) I decided to name the band after it. … It’s a book that came out in the seventies, basically essays about fishing. It’s published by the Department of

the Interior.”

The Moore brothers are joined by drummer David Byrne and over the time the band has been playing together, Nathan’s songs evolved to the rock ‘n’ roll sound Sport Fishing USA plays with live today.

“We’ve a lot more settled down how we sound live because when we started out it was just me writing the songs and recording them and it wasn’t really based on playing live,” explained Moore. “It was just writing the songs and doing the studio thing and I think now the songs are a little bit more based upon what we sound like.”

Bands Red Feathers and Pegasister are coming down from Columbus to round out the raucous Saturday line-up.

Red Feathers are coming to play The Union Bar & Grill, 18 W. Union St., for the second time in the band’s two-year career. Lead singer The Pink Owl, who uses the name as an on-stage persona, said the band is hoping to spread its wings a little bit and visit Athens, which he called a “favorite spot.”

“We want to sound like good fast, loud, rock and roll that you can dance to and that you can get dressed up for,” The Pink Owl said.

He said the band, is a glam band in a lot of ways, influenced by Guns ‘n’ Roses and early Alice Cooper.

“We like to write songs about women and dangerous things,” The Pink Owl said. “It feels good and it’s sexy in our opinion.”
