Former ODOT director to discuss 'soft skills' required for success

The former director of the Ohio Department of Transportation will lecture on how engineers can think differently to improve decision making Tuesday evening.

Gordon Proctor’s lecture, “How Systems Engineers Can Serve Society,” will highlight certain skills students can use to be more successful in business, focusing on industrial and systems engineering.

“This lecture is a great opportunity to learn from an accomplished expert how engineering can help make government and businesses decisions more successful,” said Adrienne Cornwall, Ohio University’s associate director of communications. “Students can glean advice on leadership skills that can make them more well rounded and effective in their work.”

The lecture was organized by Ben Taylor, OU’s membership director of the Institute of Industrial Engineers after he watched Proctor speak in October.

“I feel it is important for students to attend Mr. Proctor’s lecture because he will not only be discussing his experiences as the Director of ODOT, but he will also be discussing what kinds of ‘soft skills’ he feels are necessary to succeed as a systems engineer through process improvement projects,” Taylor said.

These “soft skills” aren’t typically covered in engineering curriculum, Taylor said.

The OU student chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers is sponsoring the event and operates within the Russ College of Engineering and Technology.

The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session with Proctor and reception.
