HUNDRED WATERS “DOWN FROM THE RAFTERS”

When I saw Hundred Waters at Rootwire Music and Arts Festival last year, I had no idea what I was getting into: sharp blue lights, a man dancing and arranging flowers in a vase, and ambient, slow music that had the ability to speed your heart rate and get a crowd moving. Those might be opposing modes of music, but it works spectacularly on the group’s newest track, “Down From The Rafters,” only available on its SoundCloud. The song has a thumping, steady beat moved by bass and what sounds like a woman walking up stairs in heels. And the general atmosphere the song brings is hauntingly beautiful. If the rest of the presumed-upcoming album is anything like this song, I’ll be a happy man.

E.R. THE TV SHOW

I love ER.

Not the place, but the TV show from the early 90s that was the flagship drama of NBC primetime for 15 years. It’s been off for a while now, but the DVDs of the entire series are out and I find them on Amazon for pretty cheap (I got season 6, which is great so far, last month for about $9.)

It’s dramatic, but not melodramatic.

It’s smart, but it’s not too smart. The docs actually are speaking in medical terms when a GSW comes through the ER. But you don’t need to know what each little line means, you get the point -- the patient is dying and needs help.

There are relationships, too. So of course, there’s sex, but not like Grey’s, which to me is more soap opera than drama.

They don’t make TV like this anymore.

Except for the only current-day TV show I truly care about enough to watch live: Homeland.

You should watch that, too.

GIRLS

You know what’s a good show and from this decade?

GIRLS.

I partly enjoy it is because I watch it with one of my favorite ladies, but also because the plot line is hilarious and there’s drama and it’s fun.

The script is witty — you have to listen closely or you’ll miss something.

Are the leads relatable? That’s debatable. You’ve got a drug addict, a love addict, a spaz and someone who’s just downright negative.

But they’re all interesting in their own right and one of the great things about streaming the episodes online is that you can skip ahead if Jessa is on one of her particularly annoying stints.

Cozy up with one of your fave ladies (or interested males) and treat yourselves to one of the best shows running.
