Safe sex doesn’t always have to be boring sex. POWER/GAMMA is hosting an event to show students how to have fun and stay safe while at Ohio University.
Students will be able to participate in various games and activities at the Safe and Sexy Social on Thursday in the first floor of Baker University Center. Information will be available to students on many safe sex topics.
In a small college town like Athens, sexually transmitted diseases can spread rapidly from person to person. Chlamydia is one of the fastest spreading STIs at Ohio University with about one in every 10 students testing positive for it, according to a previous Post article.
“It’s really important for people to attend because students in our age range are more at risk for STIs,” said Liz Fisher, a senior member of POWER/GAMMA.
The Safe and Sexy Social hopes to make students more aware of these statistics and prevent them from becoming another statistic. Pure Romance, a popular sex toy company, will help with this goal by providing a representative to sell students a variety of toys and oils, but the main goal of the event is to educate people on how to use these products safely.
“We’re not promoting sexual activities,” said Leslie Shvets, a senior student involved with the event. “We’re here to teach those that are active how to be safe.”
Although the event is mostly focused on how to be safe when having sex, it also provides students with information on responsible alcohol consumption.
According to information available through the POWER/GAMMA organization, 34% of fatal car crashes are caused by drunk drivers under the age of 24. This is another issue the Safe and Sexy Social plans to address.
Many different organizations such as Marti and Stewie, the Latex League, Voices for Planned Parenthood (VOX) and the LGBT center will come together Thursday night to participate in the event and raise awareness about important aspects of young college students’ lives.
“I think with all of the different organizations that are joining it will be a good event. Educational but fun,” said Dana Santoro, a second year graduate student involved with the event.
