Russ College to host workshops for improving students' job skills

Students interested in fields such as aviation and civil engineering will need to sharpen their skills for intense interview processes.

In order to prepare for work in these industries, the Russ College of Engineering and Technology will be hosting an interview strategy workshop Tuesday — Interviewing Strategies for Engineering and Technology.

This workshop, exclusively for engineering students, is a part of a series of workshops hosted by the Russ College that strategically lead up to the career fair taking place later this month.

Dean Pidcock, director of professional experiences, orchestrates and organizes these workshops.

“I promote career services for engineering students,” he said, “I will do workshops that are somewhat similar to workshops that the Career and Leadership Development Center will do, only I tailor everything … so that all scenarios are somehow involved with engineering.”

Pidcock said he usually has many students that choose to take advantage of these workshops, especially when there is a career fair coming up.

“They can learn every step of the job search process prior to the career fair,” he said.

Jeff Nye, a senior studying civil engineering, said he attended several in the past and plans on attending Tuesday’s workshop as well.

“They help you prepare for jobs, mostly,” he said.

Nye said he thinks some people would definitely benefit from CLDC workshops based on the lackluster resumes he has seen as a manager at Ping Center.

Jake Gondringer, a freshman studying mechanical engineering, also said he enjoys Russ College’s workshops because the experience is invaluable to him.

For Gondringer, interviews require a great deal of on-the-spot thinking, and the workshops are helpful to him in developing that skill.

“Interviewing is a lot like giving a speech,” Gondringer said, “The more practice you have at it, the better.”

These workshops will last through February, Pidcock said, and the full schedule can be found on Russ College’s website.
