Student group set to meet for live evolution debate

In one corner stands the science man of many millennial’s childhood and in the other a figure of religious activism — ding, ding, ding.

Bill Nye “the science guy” will face off in a debate over evolution against Ken Ham, president of the Creation Museum in Kentucky, and will be live streamed from the sold out lecture hall at the museum.

In anticipation for what may be one of the most viewed debates on evolution ever, Ohio University's Comparative Religion Club met in Ellis Hall to eat pizza and engage in the debate.

“We were looking for an event to kick off our semester as an organization and we thought this would be the perfect way to get some new faces to show up,” said Grace Eberly, treasurer for the club. “Obviously, not only is it important from a religious perspective but also we thought we could get some science students to show up for Bill Nye.”

Eberly is a Sophomore studying biological sciences and world religion, so she knows first hand the importance of mixing the world of faith with the world of fact.

“There is a common misunderstanding in the University that science and religion can’t coexist and I think that’s what this debate is tackling head on,” Eberly said. “It’ll be interesting to see what kind of decisions emerge from tonight.”

The group formed last semester as an academic club and meets biweekly in Ellis 111 Monday evenings.
