Student Senate looks to the future as Senate President Anna Morton sets new goals

Student Senate seemed to be back on track at this week’s meeting and looking toward the future.

In a speech to the student body, Senate President Anna Morton outlined her goals for the semester, which included “transparency, connectedness and being applicable to the student body.”

“I am proud and grateful to be moving onward with what this semester holds for us,” Morton said.

Last semester wasn’t all negative, Morton added.

The Athens Beautification Day, Take Back the Night and senate’s campaign to raise awareness about sexual assault and education were some of the Fall Semester’s “accomplishments,” Morton said.

Representatives from the national service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega also spoke to senate about their 5th annual Ava Nichols Faculty Pageant, which will take place on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., in Baker Ballroom.

Proceeds from the faculty pageant will go directly to Camp Quality Ohio,  a non-profit summer program to support children with cancer and their families by providing a medically safe environment.

Amanda Tragert from the Association for Cultural Exchange asked for senate’s help in increasing the visibility of the ACE program, which aims to increase interaction between international and domestic students.

ACE’s next event is a Valentine’s Day Party on Feb. 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Gordy 113.

Gabby Bacha was also appointed commissioner of residence life and Ben Mathes, a former Post reporter, was confirmed as senate’s new South Green Senator.

Senate Alumni Society member Ron Minto — who served on organization from 1994 to 1998 — voiced his support for senate during this transitional time.

“There’s this perception that there’s some glamour associated with being on Student Senate, but really it’s hard work,” Minto said.

Among the events senate members are planning include:

- Athens Beautification Day on April 13 from 12 to 6 p.m.

-   A color run with Run or Dye

The balance of the Senate Appropriations Commission was $38,451.29, while senate’s budget was $17,517.12
