Gamer Girl: Games abound in newfound downtime

Who else is excited for summer? Lately, all I can think about is all the free time I’ll have in about two weeks to devote to, you guessed it, video games.

Sure, I’ll be spending time working, seeing friends and family and relaxing in the sun, but what I’m really excited for in the next few months is more video game time.

Face it: School’s tough. You don’t get to spend as much time doing what you really like to do — whether that be exercising, reading or sleeping an acceptable amount. For me, it’s games. When the homework gets piled on, there just isn’t enough time to get the chance to lose myself in my Xbox.

The first game I plan on conquering is one of the Mass Effect titles. I’ve gotten pretty far into the second in the series but didn’t end up finishing it. The game has a cool premise: You play as a character you created (you can be a woman!) and do a long series of missions in a galaxy setting. The characters are interesting, the graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is fun.

After playing my friends’ copy of Grand Theft Auto V whenever they let me, I know I’m planning on investing in my own this summer. We spent much of our time playing online, but I hope to play through the actual storyline all the way.

As I’ve been getting more into computer games this semester, I’ve decided that I want to step into the world of Minecraft. I’ve never played it before, but I have a feeling I’d like the massive world where you can kind of do whatever you want. Plus, I think the classic-style graphics are fun.

This semester, I also started occasionally playing League of Legends, which is a free online multiplayer battle game. I haven’t played much, but I’ve played enough to know that it’s pretty addicting. At first, it seemed pretty simple but, once I got started, I knew that there was a lot of skill involved. I think I could have a blast spending just a little time each day playing League.

The final thing I want to play more isn’t a game, but my Nintendo 3DS. I bought it last summer mainly to play Animal Crossing: New Leaf, but I haven’t played it a whole lot recently. I plan on buying more games for it (right now, I’m working through a Scribblenauts game and Luigi’s Mansion). The best thing about the device is being able to carry it around with me wherever I go, knowing that I could play a little bit when I find a free moment.

Thanks for sticking with me this semester, fellow game nuts. Good luck on your finals, and just remember: You will soon have all the time in the world to play your beloved games.
