Men's Golf: Three players finish in the top-20, Ohio finishes fifth after day one

After clouds covered the Delaware Country Club, a streak of sunshine and warm weather hit the Bobcats on their way to a top-five finish on the first day of the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational.

Three Ohio golfers placed in the top-20 after 36 holes, as freshman Peyton White (13th), junior Thomas Leech (13th), who competed as an individual, and junior Andrew Mlynarski (18th) lead the Bobcats to their best finish since the fall season. Leech lead all Bobcats in the second round with a score of 68.

At one point, five of Ohio’s seven golfers were in the top-20 with White, Mlynarski, Leech, senior Phil Giesker and sophomore Brad Burgess all breaking the top tier of golfers.

Giesker, who was at one point tied for 19th, would eventually be bumped out of the top-20, finishing 26th after two rounds.

Burgess would eventually fall out of the top-20 also, tying for 31st after shooting a two round score of 152 and 12-over-par.

Mike Engelman would tie with Burgess at 31st after 36 holes, shooting an 80 in the first round and a 72 in the second round, while Freshman Ty Herriott rounded out the Bobcats in 56th on a two-round score of 161.

for comment.

Following a first round score of 374, the Bobcats shot four strokes worse in round two, posting a 378 and going a combined 28-over-par.

Toledo, Ball State, Bethel and Loyola lead the Bobcats in the standings, as the Rockets and Cardinals combined to shoot just 12-over-par.

Two seasons ago, Ohio found itself at an inferior mark, placing sixth after two rounds and finishing seventh on the second day. In the past eight seasons, the Bobcats have played in the

Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational six total times.

The fifth place finish is the best the Bobcats have obtained since the fourth place at the first day’s conclusion on Sept. 22 during the Wolf Run Intercollegiate.
