Gov. John Kasich signed the Ohio Capital Budget bill Tuesday, a move that will allocate about $2.4 billion throughout the state for projects such as infrastructure repairs and higher education funding.
Between now and June 2016, the state will spend almost $50 million Ohio University’s campuses, with $6 million of that going to campus road repairs, $1.7 million going to upgrading the elevator in the Kennedy Art Museum, $1.5 million to make upgrades to Alden Library and $1.5 million to make upgrades to Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium and $1 million to repair the university’s utility tunnels, among other upgrades.
“I am pleased to announce my support for HB 497, Ohio’s Capital Budget Bill,” State Sen. Lou Gentile, D-Steubenville, said in a news release.
“This comprehensive Capital Budget will spur economic growth and development and improve the quality of life for all the citizens of Eastern and Southeastern Ohio.”
But the $50 million applies to all OU campuses. The total amount going to Athens County is actually closer to $26 million, according to data from the Ohio Legislative Services Committee.
