OUPD responds to South Green explosions; investigation underway

The Ohio University Police Department is investigating “three small explosions” that went off on South Green late Thursday night. No injuries were reported as of press time, according to authorities.

OUPD Police Chief Andrew Powers said that someone allegedly set off “works bombs” — which are “homemade devices made by mixing drain cleanser with other household products in a plastic bottle” — behind MacKinnon Hall and Brown Hall around 10 p.m.

It is possible for the devices to cause serious injury if they explode too close to a person, Powers said, adding that the chemical reaction produces gas, which builds up pressure in the bottle until it explodes.

He declined to comment further regarding any potential suspects or arrests.

Several officers at the scene deferred all comment to Powers, who said he could not offer any further comment as of press time.

Jared Brown, a freshman at OU who is a resident of Foster House on South Green, located behind MacKinnon Hall, said the shots he heard were “really loud” and that he noticed police arriving within 10 minutes of the incident.
