Student Senate hopes to tighten its rules for its treasurer position and its holder’s accessibility to senate funds during this week’s changed meeting time and place.
Senate will meet on Monday night in Ellis Hall Room 24.
“Basically the budget rules are nonexistent, quite frankly,” said Adam Brown, senate’s treasurer. “I’ve got so much flexibility that I could … put up a decent argument how I could in most circumstances bypass the rules of the budget committee.”
Senate’s current rules allow the treasurer to distribute money without approval from senate’s budget committee. Most senate funds are supported by the general student body.
“It’s going to cover a couple of things, primarily making the treasurer more proactively accountable to the body where … the rules will compel the treasurer to do reports before the body throughout the years so members are cognizant of it,” Brown said.
Senate President Anna Morton said she hopes the rule improves the organization.
“I like the idea … it only increases transparency,” said Ryan Lombardi, senate adviser and vice president for Student Affairs. “I like that the execs are holding themselves to the same accountability.”
Mark Ferguson, the university’s newly appointed executive director of campus recreation, will be giving a presentation of his ideas for Ping Center.
Campus accessibility to students who are parents will also be discussed.
Senate didn’t meet last week because the 31st Annual Leadership Gala was held during its regular meeting time Wednesday. The body also isn’t meeting this Wednesday because Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow and an Ohio State University law professor, will be speaking during senate’s normal meeting time, Morton said.
