From the visual arts to performance, women will have a safe and accepting space to express their art Friday.
A Celebration of Women and Feminists in the Arts will feature a variety of different art performances in the Women’s Center at 1:30 p.m.
“It’s going to be a pretty relaxed event,” said Sarah Jenkins, program coordinator for the Women’s Center and the LGBT Center. “A student brought this to our attention and said she wanted to do some sort of art event and we’ve been helping her put it together.”
The program was suggested to Jenkins by Alice Ragland, a graduate student studying cultural studies and education.
“I wanted to create a space for people to get together and express themselves,” Ragland said, who will be reading some of her creative writing. “I haven’t seen that much of a space for that specifically. I just wanted to create that comfortable space.”
The celebration, which is designed as a small and informal event, will have about seven confirmed performances. These include visual art, films, poetry, music and dance.
“I want (the students) to see how many talented people go to the same school and live in the same community,” Ragland said. “This is a way for groups who have been silenced to come from invisibility to visibility in their work.”
Ragland said performers include women, feminists, members of the LGBT community and gender non-conformists.
“I think it’s going to be a really cool range of performances,” Jenkins said.
Between performances, videos will be shown of national performances. At the end, Ragland hopes that the event will start a discussion among the viewers.
