Athens summer crime update: Law enforcement looking for details on rash of burglaries, other crimes

Athens might be quieter than usual, but local law enforcement officers have been busy investigating a series of burglaries that occurred both during and after spring semester.

According to a release from Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous, the Athens Police Department is requesting any information to be had on a series of more than 20 residential burglaries in Athens from April 26-May 26.

Most of the burglaries occurred in areas featuring off-campus student housing, the release said, though the perpetrators have since branched out to more residential areas to steal anything from money to electronic equipment and personal belongings.

Investigative Lt. Jeff McCall said that East State Street, Brown Avenue, and Shannon Street have all been hit.

The report said there is a “good possibility” that several different individuals or groups are responsible for the crimes.

Deputies at the Athens County Sheriff’s Office are investigating theft, saying in the release that from May 17-24, law enforcement responded to several complaints of vehicles being broken into and stolen from.

The report adds that unlocked vehicles in The Plains and Chauncey were targeted.

APD also requests information on the location of Ronald Leroy Hogue, who has several active warrants for his arrests and could be involved in other crimes under investigation.

Hogue failed to appear for a hearing related to a charge of tampering with evidence and theft, and has also failed to

appear

in court on

additional charges relating to theft and criminal trespass.

McCall said that Hogue’s criminal trespass charge involved him stealing from someone’s property.

APD is also requesting information pertaining to Hogue’s license plate number, areas he frequented or may be traveling to and names of people he associated with.

Any information related to these crimes can be called in to 740-594-3331, and Crime Solvers is offering a $2,000 reward for any information that could lead to the arrest and/or indictment of the person or persons responsible.
