Student Senate President Megan Marzec states that she “ran on a platform of not representing students, denying this ideal that any one person can represent the thoughts and political views of all people.”

Committee explores admin pay

Through executive evaluations and member-lead discussions, OU Student Senate looked back on its structure.

Student Senate took time Wednesday night to reflect internally, through executive evaluations and member-lead discussions.

The body entered an executive session to evaluate the three executives and senate as a whole through comments written on a paper questionnaire.

Senate’s Chief of Staff Rose Troyer said the individual responses will not be released.

The newly-formed Administrative Accountability Committee presented about financial statistics of the top paid administrators at Ohio University and proposed starting a coalition to work toward solving the “perceived problem” of high administrative pay rates, said Jolana Watson, academic affairs commissioner.

Troyer and Madison Koenig, women’s affairs commissioner, gave a presentation calling for members of senate to spearhead an OU-focused version of the “It’s On Us” campaign to stop sexual assault on campus.

“There are ways that we can do it best at OU,” Koenig said. “We can ... work on the culture shift at home.”

During Student SpeakOUt, Austin Linfante, a non-senate member, first spoke about a proposed resolution, which would allow any student to offer up a resolution to the body, as long as they obtained at least 25 signatures before bringing the resolution to a senate liaison.

“I created this resolution as a sort of middle ground,” Linfante, who co-sponsored the resolution, said. “Senate doesn’t fully control what gets voted on and what doesn’t, and students that just want to mess with senate don’t get their way. At the very least, I hope that this body can have a discussion on how much realistic power senate can give the student body.”

The resolution was tabled and will be revisited next week.

Zainab Kandeh was officially sworn in as senate treasurer just before the meeting was called to order. She was elected by the body after former treasurer Carter Phillips resigned at the last meeting.
