With Parents Weekend coming up, local establishments are preparing for shows and bands are making their way to Athens. Speaking Suns, an indie-pop band from Dayton is one of them.

The band is kicking off their first tour in Athens at The Union on Friday and will be touring in New York and Boston this fall. Conor Stratton said, for the Suns, inspiration is mainly drawn from each other. They’ve been playing together for around four years. In this time, they’ve created a diverse sound that’s still very approachable to a new listener.

“(Our music is) a free-flowing experience that speaks for itself,” Stratton said.

Vanishing Country, their new album, was released Tuesday. While a digital copy is currently offered on their Facebook page for $5, the Suns also chose to release it on vinyl. This method of distribution is not the most popular but has been making a comeback recently. Many young people, who have had several other options in acquiring music their whole lives, have been opting to purchase the vinyl version of albums over digital copies.

“People are finding a comfort in being able to buy a record physically on vinyl, and being able to sit down by their player and hear an album from start to finish as it was meant to be,” Stratton said.

Stratton also said that the vinyl sales of the album were currently faring better than the CD sales. While this may be due to the fact that the vinyl is on sale for a limited time only, the decision was sound. The Suns are hopeful that the vinyl sales will continue to go well.

For Stratton, the band’s music means a lot more to their lives. The band will be performing at The Union, 18 W. Union St., at 9 p.m. on Friday.

“It's one of few things that bring us that kind of satisfaction and joy,” Stratton said. “It's an addiction.”
