Letter: Marzec floundered as representative for all

After watching your "Ice bucket challenge" I am appalled by the actions you took. Not only did you defeat the purpose of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but you diverted the public's attention to an issue on which most are uneducated.

Megan Marzec,

After watching your "Ice bucket challenge" I am appalled by the actions you took. Not only did you defeat the purpose of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but you diverted the public's attention to an issue on which most are uneducated.

I spent two months this past summer working in Israel experiencing the entire Israeli-Gaza conflict, and let me tell you, it is NOTHING like it is portrayed in the media. You claim in your video that Israel is partaking in genocide, but let me ask you a question, what would you do if rockets were being sent at your civilians on a daily basis? There are over 100 rockets shot from Hamas at Israel everyday because one of their goals as a terrorist organization is to kill all Jews. When Israel went into Gaza, they would warn all civilians that where they were attacking and to evacuate. The civilians were unable to leave because Hamas wouldn't let them, and they prefer to use humans as shields. Hamas also created terror tunnels that led into the southern parts of Israel that were going to be used as a sneak attack against Israel on Rosh Hashanah this year, but luckily the Israel Defense Force (IDF) discovered these tunnels and destroyed them. Oh, and those tunnels were built using the money Israel gave to Gaza to build business and stimulate their economy.

Gaza is not a safe place for anyone, but the only way for Israel to survive as a nation is to protect its people. Israel has agreed to numerous ceasefires with Hamas, and every time a new one is initiated Hamas breaks the ceasefire by firing rockets. And while all this is going on, Israel keeps its borders open with Gaza to supply their citizens with necessities such as food and water. The Israeli people do not support the murder of innocent Palestinians, and do everything they can to protect these people.

You said Ohio University should divest from all things Israeli, and if that's true I would love for you to actually do it correctly. This means discard your cell phone, don't use antivirus software, no electric cars, don't use the restroom (water conservation units), don't take your cancer medication, if you are diabetic stop using insulin, actually most medicines are to be stopped being used as most of them have been developed in Israel. These are just a few of the things to stop using, and there are much more (if you want a full list, just google Israeli made products and you will see the list of thousands). Israel is a developed nation, unlike the rest of the Middle East. They make advances in medication, technology, politics, etc., that the rest of the world utilizes without realizing it. This is because Israel doesn't want to hurt people, they want to help the world and create a peaceful planet.

This video is an attack on myself, my fraternity (AEPi), Hillel, Bobcats for Israel, all Jewish students, and the university as a whole. This video is an embarrassment to the university, and you should be embarrassed. There is a time and place for discussions about the Middle Eastern conflict, but an ALS ice bucket challenge video is not the time nor place. And also the fact that you were challenged by the president of the University to do this makes it even more embarrassing. The point of the video is to raise awareness for a deadly disease and you turned it into a political debate. This video should be taken down immediately.
