Missing Hocking College student found dead

Charles Cane was found dead in Columbus.

A Nelsonville man missing since Sept. 20 has been found dead.

The body of Charles Cane, a 21-year-old Hocking College student described as "at-risk" in an Alert Athens County release, was located in Columbus, according to unnamed sources Tuesday night close to Athens County Interim Replacement Sheriff Rodney Smith.

Hocking College posted an update to its Facebook page late Tuesday afternoon confirming Cane's death.

"With a heavy heart, we are sad to report that a member of Charles’ family has notified us that he is now deceased," the update said. In an email Tuesday night, Hocking College spokeswoman Laura Alloway declined to comment further.

Cane was last seen leaving Hopewell Health Centers Respite Center on the morning of Sept. 20, according to a Nelsonville Police Department report. The report also stated that Cane contacted a friend asking to acquire a shotgun and threatening to kill himself.

Cane's roommate believed he was suicidal, according to the report, and he was in Respite Center because of his "suicidal thoughts."

According to the update, Nelsonville Police Department is continuing an ongoing investigation of Cane's death. NPD officers and detectives were unavailable for comment late Tuesday.
