OU Delivery and Sigma Pi host Basketball Tournament

The popular delivery service is setting up a scholarship for innovative Bobcats.

While many people continued with their normal workout routine last Saturday, 18 teams stormed the new basketball courts to battle for a title of royalty.

OU Delivery, a student-run delivery service at Ohio University, and Sigma Pi hosted the “Kings of the Court 3 on 3 Tournament” Saturday at the Ping Center. The teams consisted of mostly Ohio University students, but even a few people from Hocking College came to participate.

All the proceeds of the event went toward OU Delivery opening a scholarship that will be open to all OU students. While out on deliveries, the OU Delivery team created the prompt for the 500-word essay: “What I’ve done in college to stand-out from everyone else.” The scholarship essay can be submitted to oudelivery@yahoo.com and more information can be found at its website, ouruniversitydelivery.com. The deadline and amount has not been set.

Because OU Delivery was a way for Aaron Hoffman and John Zinno, founders of OU Delivery, to stand out and create something new, they want to hear stories from other OU students.

“They started OU Delivery, and now we’re expanding and trying to build a foundation at OU,” said Michael Davis, a junior studying finance and an associate of OU Delivery. “We’re looking to move into other schools later but that is only one story.”

Red Bull, Chipotle and Courtside Pizza were supporters of the event and Red Bull drinks and pizza were provided. Brothers from Sigma Pi worked as referees and scorekeepers to keep the games under control. There were no foul shots or timeouts, but the other team would receive the ball if a foul was made.

“It was a good time,” said Shawn Rudolph, participant in the event and a senior studying journalism. “There was music, free food and good-spirited basketball.”

Although there were rules and regulations, the tournament still felt like another pick-up game, said Matt Soldan, member of the Toon Squad team and a senior studying psychology.

Team Toon Squad took first place and left with $60, nine buy-one-get-one free Chipotle coupons, three free deliveries from OU Delivery, free Red Bull and the opportunity to play in Red Bulls’ national tournament.

The tournament went better than expected and OU Delivery plans to host another one next month, Hoffman said.
