Sex Discussion

Students can benefit from healthy sex talk

Sex discussion aims to talk health, confidence and orgasm.

Orgasms, aphrodisiacs and sex, oh my.

The Campus Involvement Center Health Promotion in partnership with the LGBT and Women’s Centers, as well as the Survivor Advocacy Program are coming together to present a facilitated conversation around sex with college education program “The Female Orgasm” through the organization “Sex Discussed Here!”

The night will begin with an aphrodisiac tasting at 7:30 p.m. with foods like pomegranate, honey and chocolate, seeing if the myths live up to the truth, said Terry Koons, associate director of health promotion.

The event was originally scheduled to take place at Baker University Center Theatre, but was moved to the larger venue of Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium because of the event’s hype on campus.

At 8 p.m., the “The Female Orgasm” presenter will begin. Although the signs around campus boast “I (heart) Female Orgasm,” Koons said the event will still be inclusive of all genders and sexualities, something that the group boasts.

“It’s going to cover everything –– it’s not going to talk just from a heterosexual perspective,” Koons said.

Dorian Solot, co-founder of Sex Discussed Here! and co-presenter of “The Female Orgasm,” said in an email that this is important information to learn.

“We think learning about sex, being knowledgeable about sex is a good thing, whether you choose to put the information to use right away, or are waiting until you’re married or in a committed relationship,” Solot said.

For Erin Fischer, a student worker in the LGBT Center and a Post columnist, she said she thinks it’s important to expand the conversation and have a safe space to discuss sex openly with different variations than just heterosexually.

Having the group facilitate the night, LGBT Center Director Delfin Bautista said it will hopefully encourage open conversation.

“It’s nice to have sort of an outside, neutral third party, hopefully that’ll create an opportunity for people to ask questions that they may not feel comfortable asking a person they see everyday,” Bautista said.

The event is open and free admission. The sponsors of the event will also have booths set up in the lobby of Mem Aud. The Latex League will also have free condoms, LifeStyle condoms for 25 cents and Trojan condoms for 50 cents.

The program was funded through a SAC proposal through POWER/GAMMA and OUSAP to bring in the group.

Connor Timmons, co-presenter for “The Female Orgasm,” said in an email that he encourages people to come and see the event.

“It’s a funny, educational program all about women’s sexuality and pleasure,” Timmons said. “Students are often surprised to hear we really are going to talk about things like the oh-so-mysterious g-spot.”
