Student Senate President Megan Marzec

Marzec nominates students for university committees

Student Senate President Megan Marzec has just submitted her nominations for student representatives on several university committees.

Student Senate President Megan Marzec has just submitted her nominations for student representatives on several university committees.

All positions to the committees are approved — and appointed — by Ohio University President Roderick McDavis. The committees’ roles range from approving university curriculum to considering individuals for honorary university degrees.

It is the senate president’s responsibility to nominate an undergraduate representative to these committees.

“It is not desirable to have appointments still outstanding at this point in the semester because the work that takes place within these committees are important to the work of our university and to shared governance,” Jennifer Kirksey, McDavis’ chief of staff said in an email.

Marzec sent two rounds of nominations to the president’s office, the second of which was received late Tuesday afternoon. The first round of nominations was incomplete, Kirksey said.

Students are limited to serving one-year terms on all University Standing Committees, unless they were appointed to fill vacancies, causing the appointment process to be repeated each academic year, said Beth Quitslund, chair of Faculty Senate and the Committee on Committees.

At least some of the 17 standing committees that have spots for student representation have already met this year, without undergraduate representation.

Currently, Marzec is the only senate representative serving on a University Standing Committee, the Committee on Committees. She also sits on Budget Planning Council, which is separate from the standing committees.

“My second round of nominations went in today,” Marzec said in a text message. She was not available for further comment, adding, “Please do not respond to this message, I am out of the country.”

Though senate members and other undergraduates are not currently on any standing committees, it is possible they serve on other advisory bodies within the university, Quitslund said.
