Political science fraternity to bring 'K Street' to Athens

Pi Sigma Alpha hosts Justin McCaulley to speak about his experience working around government and using his political science degree after college

Ohio University’s political science honor society, Pi Sigma Alpha, will help to provide insight Thursday afternoon into how getting a job with a political science degree is possible.

The event — called “K Street and Main Street” — is organized by Judith Grant, a political science professor at OU, and Alexandria Kaufman, president of Pi Sigma Alpha.

K Street is a street in Washington, which is home to many lobbying firms.

A 2001 political science graduate from OU, lobbyist and co-founder of a California-based professional firm, Justin McCaulley, will be the guest speaker at the event.

His firm McCaulley & Company, where he serves as president, focuses on “government relations, risk management and organizational strategy,” Grant said.

“I got a lot of wonderful experiences at my time at OU, and I’m thrilled to be able to come back and be back in the cycle and be able to network in my field,” McCaulley said.

McCaulley has years of experience working around government officials.

“Building off my career as a campaign consultant and lobbyist, I plan to give some experience to poli-sci students,” McCaulley said. “There’s a joke about how poli-sci degrees aren’t good enough, so I want to show (students) how to effectively use them to get ahead in their careers.”

Pi Sigma Alpha has worked to promote this event through several different methods.

“We've sent out fliers email-wise and put up stuff all over (Bentley Hall) where most of the political class sciences are,” Kaufman said. “We're giving info to poli-sci professors in hopes that they would promote it, too. We'll probably table at Baker.”

The free event is open to the public and will be catered by Jimmy John’s, Kaufman said.

“It's not something that will take a huge chunk of time out of someone's day and you'll gain good knowledge from someone who went here and how to use your degree to get a job,” Kaufman said. “It's also a great networking event, too.”
