Students experience heat both indoor and outdoor

Athens experienced a high temperature of nearly 80 degrees on Monday. It’s expected to be in the high 70s again on Tuesday. This could cause some stress for students, especially considering they cannot always escape the heat by moving indoors.

According to an Ohio University news release, Facilities Management has been switching campus buildings from cooling to heating since mid-October. All buildings should have heat by the start of November, the release said, barring any potential problems.

Residence halls were among the first to be switched to heating, according to the release. This has left some students feeling too warm in their rooms on days when the weather is unseasonably hot.

Shelby Parker, a sophomore studying German, said her room on South Green sometimes gets unbearable now that the heat has been activated, especially because she, like most South Green residents, does not have an air conditioner to counter the heat.

“I’d never been on South Green before this year, and I wish somebody would have given me a heads up,” Parker said. “The heat makes my whole room stink if I even hang up my towel. I have to keep my door open and my window open. It’s really uncomfortable.”

Halie Chrysler-Barr, a sophomore studying communication and public advocacy, said that she thinks room temperature has an effect on everyday life.

“When you’re trying to sleep I feel like the heat is a big interruption,” Chrysler-Barr said. “You could have an exam or something that’s going on and if you can’t sleep then that’s something that’s going to be a big factor. Room temperature and making sure you’re comfortable is really important to your mental state and your physical health.”

According to The Weather Channel’s website, Athens’ tempertatures will drop throughout the rest of the week. The expected high on Saturday is 46 degrees.
