Cause of Uptown fire still unknown

What caused the uptown fire yesterday? Officials still don't know.

The fire that broke along West Union Street on Sunday morning started in the boutique, Kismet.

Kismet, 16 W. Union St., also had the most visible damage among the five buildings heavily impacted by the flames. Officials still don't know what started the fire.

Athens Fire Department officials are still monitoring the buildings along West Union Street for "hot spots" and spraying them down with water, according to a city news release.

The street is still closed to vehicular traffic and will only reopen once it can be determined that the buildings are structurally sound.

Six fire departments, which included about 60 firefighters, responded to yesterday's fire. Five firefighters and three police officers were injured, treated and released from O'Bleness.

Some residents were also allowed to return to their apartments.
