@ThatsSoAthens boasts more than 7,000 followers and proclaims on its Twitter account that it is “Your Source For Everything Athens.
It’s no secret that Athens nightlife is in a league of its own, but one Twitter account has taken it upon itself as the one-stop-shop for “Everything Athens.”
@ThatsSoAthens boasts more than 7,000 followers and proclaims on its Twitter account that it is “Your Source For Everything Athens. Fests, Nightlife, Campus Events, News & More.” Zac Sebo, the account’s creator and primary operator, also has a strong relationship with Prime Social Group, the creators of #Fest.
David Sebo, the account creator’s brother, is The Post’s asst. design editor.
Zac Sebo lives in Cleveland and graduated from OU in 2010. He created the account in August 2010, after he graduated. Sebo said a few students help him post content to the Twitter account as well as the corresponding Instagram page, but 10 student reps assist with the #Fest ticket deliveries.
“One of my main reasons for starting it (was) … I wanted to have something that kept me close to Athens, but also be able to try to build up some type of brand around @ThatsSoAthens,” he said. “I wanted to have an account that I could post information about (#Fest) but also post information about everything that’s going on in Athens. That’s So Athens just makes the most sense.”
While the account tweets on a broad range of topics, the most tweets come before and during #Fest when Sebo promotes the annual music event.
Although the account has thousands of followers, some students remain in the dark about all the page has to offer.
“I don’t follow it … I’ve just never heard of it,” said Madison Gramoy, a sophomore who is undecided.
Gramoy said she follows a lot of OU Twitter accounts to keep in touch with what is going on at the university.
Another student, Maya Velasquez, said “I’ve seen people retweet it, but I don’t have Twitter anymore.” Velasquez, who is studying business, didn’t follow the account when her Twitter was active.
Other Twitter accounts and family members keep Sebo in the loop with what is happening in Athens.
“It’s good that I have siblings (at OU) so they help me stay up-to-date with what’s going on,” he said. “The majority of it is following other accounts that I like or that are useful in terms of keeping me up-to-date and whatever I think would be interesting for my followers, I’ll turn around and post on @ThatsSoAthens.”
As far as the things Sebo posts, he attempts to hone in on what Athens community members care about.
“Some of the things that I post are quirky, random stuff like how crazy Halloween is or how far about we are until Sibs Weekend — things that people may not necessarily realize until I put it out there for them,” he said. “From my perspective, it allows me to attract more individuals on campus that may find my posts or content interesting."
He said he tries to remain educated about things that are happening in Athens like special events so he knows what people will want to read.
“I’ve just gotten into the real simple groove of seeing what’s going on and what people want to know,” he said.
He always hoped that the account would rise to a high level of popularity and, because of the nature of his content, has.
“I’m posting good content that people are interested in and if they see it … most likely they’ll follow it because it’s stuff they’re interested in.”
