Senate sets goals for self-improvement

Student Senate is set to tackle goals in its first meeting of Spring Semester.

Ohio University’s Student Senate is preparing for its first meeting of 2015 by reflecting on last semester and starting off on the right foot.

“My goal for Student Senate, as a whole this spring, is to re-earn the trust of the student body that for good reason does not believe the senate provides a meaningful service to this campus or represents their views,” said Benjamin Mathes, senate’s commissioner of governmental affairs.

Mathes said a possible solution to this is to improve student participation. He plans to do that by encouraging involvement with Student Senate and gauging student opinion on the future of OU.

“As a whole, I’m looking forward to working with the other members of Senate to connect with and organize students on this campus,” said Madison Koenig, senate’s women’s affairs commissioner. “I think we can do a lot of good for students this spring.”

Koenig is in charge of coordinating resources and events for women at OU.

“Our biggest challenge by far will be organizing Take Back the Night,” Koenig said.

Take Back the Night is an international event with the goal of ending sexual violence through education, safety and empowerment.

With a turbulent Fall Semester behind them, Student Senate will begin its spring sessions on Wednesday in Walter 235 at 7:15 p.m.
