Bobcats finish strong in last tune-up before Mid-American Conference Championships

The 'Cats competed at the Xavier Invitational on Tuesday.

Ohio completed its last tune-up Tuesday at the two-day Cobra Puma Invitational before the Mid-American Conference Championship next weekend. The Bobcats kept pace with their fourth place position from day one, shooting a 303 in the final round to finish with a final score of 890, only six strokes back of third place.

Sophomores Peyton White and Ty Herriott led the way again for Ohio on day two of competition, finishing tied for 11th and 14th, respectively, out of a 53-player field. White finished the tournament shooting six-over-par, while Herriott ended up seven-over-par.

“It’s definitely a good feeling knowing that we can be right there one and two pushing each other,” White said. “It’s always good to have someone who’s gonna know how to make you work a little bit harder and that seems to be what we have going right now and it’s kinda fun.”

The tournament was held at the Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, which experienced wind and rain during the first day. Weather was again a factor on Tuesday, as wind gusts reportedly reached 40 miles per hour on the course.

“The course was difficult because it was so wet outside that there would be times when you would hit your ball in a spot and it would just embed into the ground and you would never find it,” Herriott said. “It was a tough test of golf and a tough test of mental toughness and I think we did well under the circumstances.”

This was only the second invitational coach Bob Cooley and Ohio have participated at this year. The “close-to-home” feeling is something the Bobcats are looking forward to heading into the MAC Championship, which will be held in Akron.

As an overall unit, Ohio has been hitting its stride as of late, as its fourth place finish at the Xavier Invitational marks its second consecutive top five finish in a tournament.

“I think we definitely have a lot of confidence going into the MAC’s,” Herriott said. “We understand that if we can get a good finish at MAC’s then we can make some noise next year in all the tournaments.”

The MAC Championship will take place on May 1 and continue through May 3 at the Sand Ridge Golf Club. The Bobcats finished in eighth in 2014.
