Groundwater sampling project underway soon

The County Commissioners will speak with Jennifer Bowman on Tuesday about an upcoming Groundwater Sampling project.

The Athens County Commissioners and Jennifer Bowman, the environmental project manager for the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs at Ohio University, will continue talks at the commissioner’s meeting Tuesday about an upcoming groundwater sampling project being put in motion.

The two sides met last week, Athens County Commissioner Chris Chmiel said, though the commissioners felt that there were still questions that were left unanswered about the project and are looking for Bowman to have more answers this week.

“We felt that there (were) still things that needed to be fixed so we pushed the talks back to this week,” Chmiel said. “This project is a very good thing.”

The project is still in the planning stages, Chmiel said.

“We are still looking to see if we can get the money together for this project,” Chmiel said.

The project includes putting pumps in place to test the drinking water stored underground in Athens to make sure there are no issues with the water, Chmiel said.

Chief of Athens County Emergency Medical Services Rick Callebs will also be at Tuesday morning’s weekly county commissioner’s meeting to present the commissioners with a proclamation approving the annual National EMS Week.

The week is meant to show appreciation for emergency medical service employees while educating people on what EMS does for the community.

“We will inform the public about some information pertaining to our services, and also we will probably conduct station tours so people can get an inside look at where we work,” Callebs said.

National EMS Week is schedule to begin on May 17 and conclude May 23.

The commissioners also plan on visiting a road in the York Township on Tuesday.

“It is a very old road and there is a building that is in the middle so we will check out and discuss whether to make the decision to close it down or not,” said Chmiel.

After the visit, the commissioners will return to their original meeting place to hold a public hearing, where they will ultimately make the decision of the road’s fate.
