After delay, marijuana activists will stop at Ohio University on Thursday

Marijuana legalization activists will be on campus Thursday to promote the ballot measure to legalize marijuana in Ohio

After rescheduling its Ohio University stop last week, the group trying to legalize marijuana in Ohio will be setting up their Green Rush Bus tour in front of Baker Center on Thursday.

The tour, which launched in August, has been traveling to each of the state's 88 counties in order to generate support for its ballot measure, which would legalize marijuana for medical and recreational use.

Faith Oltman, spokesperson for ResponsibleOhio, said the group has been trying to stop at as many universities as possible before the deadline for voter registration, which is Oct. 5.

Students will have the chance to fill out a voter registration form and learn about potential job opportunities that the bill might generate.

Oltman said the group's mascot "Buddie," a muscular, human-sized marijuana bud in superhero attire, will likely make an appearance.

Last week, when the group planned to make their appearance on campus, OU spokeswoman Katie Quaranta said no one at the university had been notified about the tour stop.

As a result, she said there might not be any parking spots available.

But this week, the group obtained a permit to park on Oxbow Trail, just outside of Baker Center on the lower level, Quaranta said.

ResponsibleOhio’s ballot measure would legalize marijuana for medical and recreational use and would authorize it to be produced at 10 growing facilities throughout Ohio.

The marijuana would then go to one of five testing facilities, one of which would be in Athens, before being shipped off to retailers, who could sell the marijuana to people 21 and older.
